MotoGP 2016
As always, feel free to skip over my ramblings and scroll down to the photos.
After deleting around 900 photos of empty track, blurred scenes, and images where the damn fence just got in the way, I had just over 2000 photos to sort through. I selected these 66 photos to share. There were plenty more good shots, but really, even I think it gets to be a bit redundant. I mean do you really want to see all 351 shots I got at turn 11? I didn't think so.
THE EVENT
April 8th - 10th was the 2016 MotoGP at Circuit of the Americas. It was another great event. I didn't make it out on Friday, but spent all of Saturday and Sunday at the track.
It rained off and on on Saturday, but was dry for the GP bike qualifying. Sunday was mostly overcast, and the back part of the track was wet when we arrived, but it never did rain on us.
The vendor tents were filled with all the new bikes and you could sit on pretty much all of them. BMW and Harley Davidson both had demo bikes on hand and were taking people on test rides! Unfortunately (or is that "fortunately"?) I didn't get to test ride the BMW NineT that I so very much want.
On Sunday Moto3 and Moto2 were a little delayed because of an oil spill from a wreck during morning practice, but MotoGP started right on time.

Marc Marquez once again came in first, and by a wide margin. So far he has one all 4 MotoGP races at COTA, and he's also won every race at Indianapolis since he started in MotoGP in 2013. So he's won the past 10 races held in North America.
I was a bit disappointed that Valentino Rossi wrecked out early in the race, but that's the way it goes sometimes.
THE PHOTOGRAPHY
I had a good time trying to deal with the fences, and am pretty proud of the shots I got at Turn 11 and turn 17. I had to shoot over an 8' fence and through a 6' by 1.5' opening in a second fence about 25' away. To do this I use a mono-pod to get my camera about 1 foot over the first fence and then use a remote shutter release to fire the camera. I've tried using a wireless set up with a tablet but the time lag is just too great for such fast moving bikes. So instead I have set my camera on Live View and try to frame the shot in my little 3.5" screen about 4' over my head. This gets to be a bit of a challenge when I’ve got my lens zoomed all the way out to 300mm and a cross wind is blowing in gusts. One of the professional photographers got a kick out of it and took a photo of me taking photos. LOL.
I also played around a bit more this year. I'm pretty pleased with the photos on the 3rd row. They were taken with a very low shutter speed. Given that I wasn't using the mono-pod at the time, I'm surprised the background isn't also a total blur. I'm also pretty happy with the 2 photos in the middle of row 15. I had the camera set in it's "miniature" mode, so had no control over any of the settings. It over saturated the colors, but I kind of like the effect.
